Mrs. Mary Deloise Bates Dukes, daughter of the late Henry “Buddy” and Maria Bates was born in Saluda County on July 25, 1945. She departed this life at her home in Saluda, SC on November 1, 2015 and entered into eternal rest.
Lois received her education in the public schools of Saluda County and graduated from Riverside High School in 1963. She continued her education at Piedmont Technical College where she received a certification in Nursing Assistance.
She gave her life to the Lord at an early age. She was a lifelong and faithful member of Lockhart Baptist
Church where she served faithfully until her health declined just recently. She has served in various areas of ministry, including a member of the Lockhart Gospel Chorus, Usher Board, Sunday School secretary,Tyler Youth Choir Advisor, and Church Anniversary Planning Committee. She was active in her local community and was named Saluda County’s NAACP woman of the year in 1990.
Lois worked at the Saluda Knitting Mill and Knight Industries for many years. She retired from Menardi-Filtex after several years of service. Known as “Mrs. Dukes” throughout the halls of the elementary, middle and high schools of Saluda County, she began substituting shortly after retirement.
She was preceded in death by her sisters Susie Bell Craig and Annie Ruth (Robert) Freeman and brothers, William Bates and Jessie Bates. She leaves to cherish her memories her devoted husband of 40 years, Johnnie Edward Dukes of the home, daughters Shonda (Cleavon) Manigault of Atlanta, GA and Kimberly (Tyrrell) Autry of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Esther Lee Bush of Columbia, SC and Rosa Mae Bates of Saluda, SC; Four grandchildren, Gabriel ChristianAutry, Chloe Faith Autry and Noah Emmanuel Autry all of Charlotte, NC and Peyton Simone Manigault of Atlanta, GA. Two sister in-laws, Florita Washington and Dorothy Minor both of Washington, DC and Emily Bates of Greenwood, SC; One brother-in-law, Donald Duke of Oxen Hill, MD.
Service is on November 7, 2015 at 1:pm , Lockhart Baptist Church , Reverend Herman Jenkins, Pastor, Logan Funeral Home in Charge of service.
