On June 8, 1962, in Saluda, South Carolina, our lives were blessed with the arrival of Melvin Richard Gilliam. He was a beloved son of the late John Thomas “JT” Gilliam and Lottie Bell Matthews-Gilliam. Richard, as he was known to family and friends, received his education in the Saluda County public school system. As a young man, one of his favorite pastimes was fishing. He enjoyed the peace it gave him when he was out on the lake with a rod in his hand and the peaceful quiet that surrounded him. But more than anything, Richard loved spending time with his family. Being surrounded by family was a constant reminder of the love that abounded within that circle. On May 7, 2025, Richard began the journey we all must take as he entered the Kingdom to be with his Heavenly Father. Although we love him, God loved him best and needed him more. He joins those who have gone on before—his parents, and brothers, James Gilliam and Isaiah Nelson. Left to cherish precious memories of Richard are his loving siblings: brothers: Lonnie, Tommie, and Johnny Gilliam, and sisters: Gloria, Mary, Orilene, Darline Gilliam, and Betty (Pam) Nelson, all of Saluda, South Carolina; his devoted aunt, Diane (George) Gilliam Wise, and uncle, Joseph Gilliam and Moses Gallman both of Prosperity, SC. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
